Migration from Copper Network
FTTO quality, cost control with Burst
Context
With the gradual shutdown of the legacy copper network, an operator needed to migrate several dozen sites still connected via SDSL to fiber solutions.
Its clients — SMEs, small businesses, and technical sites — were asking for better quality:
- insufficient bandwidth
- recurring outages
- unstable latency
- inability to support modern usage (VoIP, cloud, VPN, etc.)
Replacing the entire fleet immediately with standard FTTO would have exceeded the budget and risked project failure:
- some sites, with low criticality, didn’t require 100% guaranteed FTTO
- others were more sensitive to cost than maximum performance
Challenge: deliver FTTO-level quality while controlling costs, without degrading the customer experience or compromising network resilience.
Solution Deployed
To balance performance, resilience, and cost-efficiency, ielo proposed a mix of standard FTTO and FTTO Burst, adapting the level of guarantee to the criticality of each site.
Critical sites (main branches, key business platforms): migrated to standard FTTO, providing:
- guaranteed symmetric bandwidth up to 10 Gb/s
- stable latency
- high availability
- 4-hour guaranteed restoration (GTR 4H)
Secondary or office sites: migrated to FTTO Burst, offering:
- guaranteed bandwidth between 10 Mb/s and 100 Mb/s, sufficient for VoIP, VPN, remote work, and cloud usage
- burst capacity from 100 to 1000 Mb/s to absorb traffic spikes
- GTR 8H included
- all at a cost-effective rate
Both solutions rely on ielo’s FTTO architecture, built on a Dedicated Optical Local Loop (BLOD) and fully independent infrastructure.
Result
The copper migration was completed with minimal service disruption while respecting the economic constraints of end clients.
Key benefits:
- smooth anticipation of the copper network shutdown
- elimination of instability caused by congestion
- scalable capacity without excessive cost thanks to Burst
- consistent quality across the entire fleet via FTTO infrastructure
- better absorption of traffic peaks (backups, updates, remote work)
- enhanced client satisfaction through a gradual, controlled migration
The operator now has a modern, future-proof, and scalable network fleet — fully compliant with post-copper requirements and with a cost model adapted to each site.
